Current lithium-ion batteries have performance limitations, especially for applications where high power, fast charging and long cycle life are key requirements. The technology that works for passenger electric vehicles will not work as well for industrial or commercial applications, where expensive capital assets need to return a low Total Cost of Ownership over their lifetime.

Echion’s XNO® lithium-ion battery anode materials provide a solution that can effectively electrify heavy duty transport and industrial applications. When packaged in a suitably designed battery cell, module and pack system, XNO® offers end users the low total cost of ownership and high operational productivity required.

An example of this can be seen in the rail industry where the consideration of various stakeholders can be satisfied by a decarbonisation solution that delivers on the key metrics.

For rolling stock manufacturers (OEMs), the improvement in battery performance using XNO® is applicable for both ‘pure’ battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell rolling stock. For both, the high energy density can reduce the volume and mass of a train’s battery, yet still provide maximum acceleration and regenerative braking power matched to the rating of the traction motor/generators.  

For train operating companies, the practical fast-charging capability enables the highest fleet productivity and route viability. It enables battery electric operation in partially, or discontinuously electrified routes by maximising opportunistic rapid charging.

 The increased energy density of XNO® (>40% improvement over LTO) also increases the range of battery electric rolling stock, and the allowable distances achievable between opportunistic charging locations. The potential for lighter battery packs can also reduce track access charges, due to the lower wear rates of trains on the track infrastructure.   

For infrastructure managers, the availability of longer-range battery electric rolling stock minimises the coverage of overhead line equipment required to provide electric operation. Reducing the cost to navigate difficult and expensive locations such as tunnels and turnouts, which makes zero-emission branch lines more economically viable.
