Echion strengthens commitment to a sustainable future with sponsorship of Cambridge Climate Society
Advanced materials producer, Echion Technologies (Echion), has announced its sponsorship of the Cambridge Climate Society. As sponsors, the Cambridge-based company has furthered its commitment to tackling climate change, in particular by supporting the knowledge exchange and career development within the Society.
Cambridge Climate Society brings together students from the University of Cambridge to foster new ideas and inspire action and positive progress in tackling important climate crisis issues. The Society abides by strict principles regarding which companies and individuals it can partner with, stating that it will only accept sponsorship from companies and organisations whose principles and actions align with those of the Paris Agreement.
Echion formed in 2017 in the labs of the University of Cambridge where CEO, Jean de La Verpilliere, and CTO, Alex Groombridge, studied and worked. A shared interest in developing fast-charging battery materials to support the decarbonisation of the bus industry led to the formation of the company. Five years on, Echion now produces its market-leading XNO® battery anode materials, which enable battery manufacturers to produce batteries with unparalleled fast-charging capability, long cycle life and improved safety, with up to double the energy density of best-in-class competitors. These characteristics are highly suitable for use in industrial, mass-transport and micro-mobility electric vehicles.
Minimising the carbon footprint of its materials has been a key focus of Echion during the development of XNO®. Recent studies by Ghent University determined that Echion’s XNO® anode materials produce half the CO2 emissions of Lithium Titanate (LTO) anode materials, which are currently the most widely used anodes in fast-charging, long-life applications. These findings will have major benefits for battery producers and end users that have carbon reduction and ‘net zero’ targets.
Jean de La Verpilliere, CEO of Echion Technologies, said: “As a spin out of the University of Cambridge, we are proud to be investing back into the community by sponsoring the Cambridge Climate Society. The students of today are the innovators of the future, and I hope that our journey to becoming a market-leading battery anode material provider can inspire others to pursue their eco-innovation dreams. We look forward to supporting the Cambridge Climate Society in their efforts to tackle the most important issue of our time.”
Lucas Barros, MBA Student and Finance Lead at Cambridge Climate Society, said: “The Cambridge Climate Society welcomes Echion Technologies as an official sponsor. We are pleased to be supported by successful and environmentally conscious University of Cambridge alumni such as Jean and Alex, and their generous donation and expertise will help further our work in inspiring action around climate-related issues.”
