Echion’s XNO® demonstrator cells pass UN38.3 safety test benchmarks
Our XNO® demonstrator cells have achieved United Nations (UN) 38.3 certification. The cells which have been certified are 1Ah pouch cells optimised for high power, and help showcase XNO®’s fast-charging and discharging capabilities. Being certified to UN38.3 allows for the easier transportation of these demonstrator cells to customers wishing to evaluate Echion’s XNO® technology.
Used by regulators and authorities around the world, the UN 38.3 manual of tests aim to simulate real-world transportation conditions such as high temperatures, vibration and shock, and altitude and low pressure environments. A very positive result for Echion’s 1Ah XNO® demonstrator cells was seen in the external short circuit test, where cell temperatures did not excel 90°C, significantly lower than the 170°C pass limit for this test.
Echion’s Chief Product Officer, Loubna El Ouatani, said, “UN38.3 is an important, universally recognised, independent test which we are pleased to have passed. Because XNO® is a new material, being able to demonstrate its impressive capabilities and potential is a significant step for Echion and it highlights to our cell manufacturing customers that UN38.3-certified cell designs are easily possible with XNO®. As a bonus, it also makes it easier to transport demonstrator cells to customers eager to fast-track their testing and evaluation of our technology.”
Echion’s niobium-based anode material, XNO® delivers lithium-ion battery performance highly suited for industrial, commercial and high value applications that demand the highest up-time, lowest total cost of ownership and maximum performance. XNO® enables lithium-ion batteries that can safely charge in less than ten minutes, maintain high energy densities even at low temperatures, and deliver high power across a cycle life of more than 10,000 cycles. Applications powered by XNO® include battery electric and hybrid trains, mining haul trucks, high-demand buses and delivery vehicles as well as applications in motorsport and space.
